Zonzo Estate x Beau Taplin Shiraz 2020
A special collaboaration.
This Shiraz is our first collaboration with local Poet Beau Taplin which features one of his poems on the label. It is a classic Yarra Valley Shiraz with notes of red berry fruits, black pepper, liquorice and raspberry. Beau recommends pairing this drop with homemade gnocchi duck ragù with porcini mushrooms. An introduction To Beau:
My name is Beau Taplin—a poet born and raised right here in the Yarra Valley!
Like many writers, I’ve long been an admirer of great wines, and I find it no accident that these two art forms share such a close and historic bond. Wine and poetry share a spirit for romance and beauty. Whether dark and sensual or bright and sweet, they are all about reaching into the very heart of life, and drinking deep from the joy and the passion that abounds within.
When I reached out to Zonzo Estate in late 2019, I was greeted immediately by their sense of warmth and artistry. They are not only producers of wine, they bottle moments of magic and experience, and since these are the values I hold most dear, the collaboration couldn’t have been more fitting!
The label artwork I designed in partnership with Jess Wells (@jesswells) and Ashley Jean (@thebrewedartistry), who collaborated with me on my last book Here At Dawn and upcoming release Verses respectively. We wanted to combine the sensibilities of 19th century romanticism with the sleek and minimalist aesthetics of modern design, and I couldn’t be prouder of it!
Throughout the pandemic, I like many of us experimented a whole lot on my culinary skills and so the first meal I paired with a bottle of our wine was a Gnocchi with duck ragù and porcini mushrooms *chefs kiss*
As for the poem I chose, well it tells a story impossibly dear to me, but simply put: it’s about the magic of those rare moments in life where all the world seems to draw two people together; where it seems like you have stepped with each other into another world—and from that moment forward, you are forever changed.
Plush red berry fruits and black pepper and all spice. This wine really evolves in the glass to reveal flavours of liquorice, raspberry, rose, warm spice and very subtle hints of honey. Many of the characters on the nose are also present on the palate with a great emphasis on spice and then fruit. Tannins play alongside the spice forming some of the structure within in the fruit profile.
Harvested on the 26th March 2020. De-stemmed but berries left intact to promote perfume in final wine. Ferments were plunged initially then pumped over daily. At around day five the ferment was run down and skins were worked by foot to start building tannin structure. Primary fermentation was completed after 13 days. Pressed after 21 and filled to Oak with a portion being 20% new French Oak.
Bottled February 2021.
